Miniature Earth

Miniature Earth (ME) will make it easy for any citizen to understand the state of the world by presenting statistics in a way that people can understand.

The magnitude of the world can be overwhelming. How massive is the number of impoverished people? What percentage of the overall population lives in urban areas? How vast is the threat of AIDS? It’s hard to put things in perspective when the numbers are so large. Building on the work of journalist Donella Meadows (1990), The Miniature Earth gives a clear view by reducing the global population to only 100, while keeping statistics the same. The effect enables us to see the differences on our planet more clearly, and perhaps consider how our actions can impact humanity.

The project began by raising awareness of many issues related to sustainability and development through the use of a video presentation created in 2001. Between 2001 and 2007 over 1million people viewed the video from the website. But in 2007 it has been available on Youtube, resulting in a further 2million or more visitors to the site. Still it is attracting over 1,000 visitors daily on average. This will increase substantially when marketing activity begins. Additionally, a Google search for “the miniature world” will produce over 83,000 listings. Of these almost 100% are directly related to the project.

2008 it was decided that the objectives of the project were compatible with the establishment of a social enterprise. The enterprise will continue to raise greater awareness of the issues. For the first time the project will also raise funds and mobilise support for NGO´s fighting the causes and symptoms of poverty in the 50 Least Developed Nations of the world, as defined by the United Nations. Also, in Brazil where the project was born.

We will be donating at least 20% of profits to NGO´s that we can see are offering practical solutions to problems in a way that we believe to be empowering and sustainable.

We anticipate being able to raise significant revenue from the sale of products under our own brand, and by licensing the use of our brand to other companies in return for royalty payments. Success will depend on how well we are able to manage and grow the brand.

Soon we will have a catalogue of products available. If you would like to knwo when they re launched please email me paul@pbarnett.co.uk
